Community Mentoring - Become a Mentor!

Ruth Rales JFS has two wonderful volunteer programs for adults who are willing to make a difference in a child's life!

  Big Pal/Little Pal

The Big Pal/Little Pal program is a wonderful opportunity to have a positive impact on a child's life. An adult volunteer is matched with a child from a single parent family for the purpose of providing a positive role model.  Men are matched with boys.  Women are matched with girls

How does it work?

Big Pals can be any age 21 or over.  Children in the program can be anywhere from 5 - 17.  Mentors spend an average of every other week with the child, three hours at a time. The Big Pal gets together with his/her Little Pal after school or on weekends.  All arrangements for getting together are made between the Big Pal and the parent.  Together the Big Pal and Little Pal go on a variety of outings dependent on their interests.

Grandparenting Program

More children than ever are growing up without the wise and loving relationship of a grandparent. If your child isn't fortunate enough to have a Grandma or Grandpa, doesn't have one living close by, or if you are a single parent whose children could use a little extra love and attention, your family can participate in the Grandparenting Program at Ruth Rales Jewish Family Services.

How does it work?

Caring, mature adults are paired up with children between 3-13 years old and become their volunteer grandparents...to share their affection...read to them...play games...tell them stories...and share their hobbies. Professional staff interview both the family and volunteer "grandparents" to provide a match that supports the interests of both. Families can expect to have "grandparents" spend a minimum of six hours per month with your child.

What do volunteers say about the program?

Volunteer Sandy Sadja:
"I hope children in the program can perpetuate the kindness and caring they've received through the program just as I remember and appreciate what others did for me. Each of us is passing down a very special gift of time and caring to help future generations... I've received more than I've given. Almost anyone can write a check, but giving your time, love and attention provides a feeling of satisfaction that goes beyond a cash donation. You see the end result, and the boys become part of your life and family. Seeing the changes - how each has grown and become successful or more confident - is a wonderful feeling!"
