IN THE NEWS: Claims Conference increases funds

At a time when many are feeling the economic pinch, there's good news for Florida Holocaust survivors, some of who face a daily struggle just to get by. The Claims Conference is increasing its total 2010 allocations to $200 million for social welfare programs for elderly Jewish victims of Nazism. Local Florida agencies will get $4,485,000, a 40 percent increase over 2009.

Jennifer Berger was out of work on permanent disability from the ovarian cancer she had been fighting for the past 10 years when she decided she wanted to do something meaningful. She answered a newspaper ad to become a volunteer with the Welcome Home Program, and has been teaching weekly art classes every since.

Sandy Klein was looking for activities to keep her mother-in-law, Pauline, engaged after she had moved from the Northeast to South Florida in 1979. Thirty-one years later, the social group she founded is called the Feldman Family Diamond Club, and Sandy and her husband Joe are still volunteering.

When Sandy Klein started the Diamond Club three decades ago to offer seniors, age 75 and over, more social opportunities, she had no idea it would grow into the phenomenon it has become. The senior social club which began with a handful of elderly shut-ins that met weekly in a room at Temple Emeth in Delray Beach, now serves more than 100 area residents.

RRJFS Hosts Workforce Alliance Mobile Unit for Jobseekers

Twenty-nine local job seekers received assistance from the Workforce Alliance Mobile Unit at Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service on July 1. Workforce Alliance counselors registered first-time users in the “Employ Florida” web site, helped job seekers complete online applications, and discussed career opportunities.

200 Seniors Celebrate Passover

For eighteen years, hundreds of older senior clients have been celebrating the Passover spirit together at the Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service Communal Model Seder. Once again, they looked forward to this year’s event for weeks. Then, late in the morning on Tuesday, March 23, they dressed in their best and waited – many in wheelchairs or with walkers or aides - for the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s busses that took them to B’nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton for this very special event.
