Dina Roth Port, author of "Previvors: Facing the Breast Cancer Gene and Making Life-Changing Decisions" was keynote speaker, along with Lisa Marton, a previvor featured in the book who co-chaired the event with Michele Blair. Women of all ages from throughout Palm Beach County had an opportunity to learn from top experts about a wide range of topics related to breast cancer prevention, treatment and more. More>>

Norman Rales, a Hillsborough Beach resident who was known throughout South Florida for his philanthropy, died on March 7 at the age of 88. Mr. Rales' donation to the Jewish Family Service of South Palm Beach County in 1989 made possible the construction of the agency's building which was named the Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service in honor of Mr. Rales' wife."Everybody knows the name Ruth Rales," said Danielle Hartman, the agency's president and CEO. "It's in large part because of his generosity to the agency." The Rales' support continues through the Norman and Ruth Rales Foundation. More>>

The Passover Holiday is not so joyous for many Jews who live alone and are far from loved ones in our community. Passover food packages are being prepared and will be delivered to 550 clients of the Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry. JFS is also making plans for a model seder for seniors who are clients of the agency. The seder is sponsored by residents of Boca West Country Club and Debbie Belford.

IN THE NEWS: Family service seeks paid companions for seniors

Senior citizens looking for work can find a new profession, assist their fellow seniors and make money at the same time. Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service west of Boca Raton is looking to train 30 men and women, 55 and older, as companions to frail elderly residents of Boca Raton and Delray Beach who need help with light housework or getting to the grocery store. The training, through a $158,000 grant from the Palm Beach County Workforce Alliance, offers a stipend for 10 hours of classwork and then on-the-job training with family service clients who need assistance. More>>

Writers of a local community center are offering their perspectives on senior citizen life in a quarterly literary magazine geared toward their peers. The first edition of the publication, Central Views, was produced by a dozen Weisman Delray Community Center members. Initially, 100 copies of the 13-page newsletter were printed. But the winter 2012 edition proved so popular with members that the center published an additional 100 copies. More>>
